Reminds me of the dude from the Grateful Dead Movie who is right up front against the stage during the U.S. Blues. The look on his face and the smile which seems to envelope his entire being raditates happiness. I think that moment and that Head really sum-up the joy one could get only from a Dead show. Anyone happen to know what I'm talking about and who that guy is? Just curious.

I know the guy you mean, in the overalls, right? I think he's the same one that eats the "chiclets." Speaking of the movie, a former student of mine dated a guy whose father was a head from way back, and he went to college with the dude who walks up raising hell about the cameras and everything. Apparently the dude was high-strung on many levels.

Yeah, the overalls dude. At that moment in time I truly believe he was the happiest man on the planet. In fact, I'm pretty sure that the joy that he was able to generate could have powered a small city. That is probably the single thing I miss most about shows: that feeling of incredible joy filling your entire being when the boys were clickin', the crowd was rockin', and your smile was permanent. Ain't many things much finer than those moments. As I've said many, many times: thanks to the folks here keeping the music available for everyone; they help keep the memories of those moments alive. Thanks, dudes.

Which puts a morbid thought in my head (sorry), meaning that on some future day a news story about the last surviving attendee of a Grateful Dead show. Front page story. A sentimental piece. Sort of what you saw as the last of the WWI vets died off, last surviving member of Titanic, last person of whatever, etc. All empires eventually fall.

As for uplifting shows, i've always found Hampton 3/20/86 a goodly dose of medicine for relieving the doldrums. It's not a show that gets much positive reviews, but what can i say, i think it is underappreciated.

Ha, ha, not at all. And besides, i only recently got home from work, haven't had time to drink anything. We can't all sit home with a busted leg (sorry, you know (i think) i mean that in the nicest way possible) and start early with the drinkin' and thinkin'.

yeah the guy who expected to be paid and was all pissed they were filming it? What an ass. Good thing the band preserved it on film huh? That Sam dude was right - there is nothing like a GRateful Dead concert PERIOD! Never will be.

I think the guy in the overalls singing along to U.S. Blues ("back to back, chicken shack") was called Crazy Joe...don't know where I heard or read that, but it seems to have stuck in my head...

he was happy, wasn't he??? :)

yeah he was great! YOu know who I also love? Is that dude obviously tripping his mind out on the Winterland floor all giggly about how they promised they would play and they're gonna play. Like he's waiting for the MotherSHip to land! Gotta say, I felt like that too!
